The mechamsm of resistance of Capsular Type D strains of Pasteurella multoctda to killing by rabbit polymorphonuclear neutrophlls (PMN) was studmd using an in vitro assay that differentmtes intrafrom extracellular bacteria. Two Capsular Type D stratus (3761 and 3766), resistant to kllhng by rabbit PMN, and one Type A strain (R1), susceptible to PMN destruction, were compared. After combining opsonized bacteria and PMN, the Capsular Type D Stratus 3761 and 3766 remained extracellular while the Capsular Type A Strata R1 was internalized by PMN. Thus, both Type D strains were resistant to phagocytosis by rabbit PMN.
